How to Make Piñata Decor
Materials: Various colors of tissue paper Elmers glue or modpodge Paintbrush Patience Ok so this was a lot harder than I had thought it was going to be. Maybe I’m just over ambitious when it comes to crafting but it really took some practice. So for G’s fiesta first birthday pinatas were a must. I had considered making the actual pinata but I controlled myself and decided to buy it and just put pinata paper on some number ones and a cactus I found at hobby lobby. |

Tissue paper
Ok so tissue paper is officially one of the worst materials to work with. It did take some patience, but I got the hang of it. I first had tried to cut the strips in loops. On the pinata we purchased the tissue paper is in loops. I used a strip folded in half and cut half way. It didn’t work well. I think it may only be a method for covering large items but my little ones looked bad. So next I just cut long 1 inch wide strips and made little snips about a half centimeter apart like this.

At first I tried with a hot glue gun. It was a major fail trust me. Hot glue does not lay flat and the tissue ripped to easily. I used Mod Podge and it worked well. I dipped my paint brush into Mod Podge and then painted one the form where I was placing the paper and then put the tissue on the wet form. Beware once the tissue is wet readjusting it often let to rips. You have to be super gentle with the wet paper. I put on two strips of the same color before moving onto the next color. Here is a pic to compare doing one strip of each color compared to two.
For the cactus I just used pieces of tissue paper and used the technique typically referred to as decoupage. I applied Mod Podge to the form, then I laid the paper on it and brushed/pressed the paper on with my paint brush that had more Mod Podge on it. Essentially you are applying another layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper.
